Although it is one of the youngest AOCs established in Bordeaux, the region has been growing grapes as far back as the 2nd century. This is markedly a region that focusses on red wines which account for 97% of the wine production The Blaye is the northernmost region abutting the Gironde and boasts soils of clay and limestone. A little further south and to the east are the appellations of Francs and Castillon. They are nestled near the famous region of Saint Emilion. The gravely soils and milder climate there produce intense wines full of flavor. Cadillac is located east of there along the Garonne river. The calcareous soils produce delicate and elegant wines. The C\u00f4tes de Bourdeaux wines afford excellent values in Bordeaux wines. They are often overshadowed by the more notable and famous regions. But the hold their own and I would put a C\u00f4tes de Bordeaux up against many of the wines from Margaux and Saint Emilion. This month we will be tasting twelve unique wines from this AOC.
