Historical evidence points to this region of the world as the birthplace of wines and cultivation of grapes was being done over 8000 years ago. It is likely wine was first produced by accident when wild grape juice was stored in clay vessels called a Qveri, buried in the ground, and found to naturally ferment. Winemaking in this region today from unusual and indigenous grape varieties still utilizes fermentation in clay Qveris. But the wine quality has definitely achieved modern standards.
