Join us this Saturday, August 8, as the Red River Valley Chapter of the American Wine Society travels—by way of the glass—to Ribera del Duero.

Located along Spain’s Duero River, Ribera del Duero is known for powerful, deeply colored red wines made primarily from Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino. Its high-elevation vineyards and dramatic temperature swings between hot days and cool nights help produce wines with ripe dark fruit, firm structure, lively acidity, and excellent aging potential.

Our tasting will explore ten wines from Ribera del Duero, including several Crianzas and a Reserva, along with wines made from old vines and some of the region’s best-known producers. We’ll see both sides of the region’s personality—from concentrated, oak-aged wines to more modern examples that emphasize finesse and freshness.

To begin the evening, we’ll bend the theme just a little with two white wines from neighboring Rioja. Both feature Viura, Rioja’s principal white grape, with one offering a fresh, straightforward expression and the other incorporating Malvasia, Garnacha Blanca, barrel fermentation, and lees aging.

It should be a fascinating look at one of Spain’s most celebrated red-wine regions, with a refreshing white-wine warmup to get us started.
