You know we love our red wines and we love our red blends. We have tasted blended wines from all over the world. Blending is done to bring qualities of different varieties together in a marriage of textures and flavors. If a particular grape is thin skinned and lacks tannin structure, blending in some wine made from a more tannic grape variety will round it out. Have a flabby grape? Mix in some grapes with more vibrant acidity to lift it up. No where is this more evident than in Bordeaux, France. Typically, the winemaker gets to decide the blend in your glass. But this night, we get to decide. We have sourced varietal wines from Washington state that are 100% (or so) made from four of the red grapes typical of Bordeaux – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. Taste them separately and then start experimenting. Mix them in your glass in the proportions you think brings out the best character of each grape and each wine. You be the cellar rat and do a little experimenting. Join us for a red blending experiment you will not soon forget.
